Sylbgeim Himalbraena
The Lominsan ex-captain of Leviathan's Nightmare, now wanderer to find purpose in this life she still has left.
Backstory
Sylbgeim was the daughter of Syhrwyb, Captain of Leviathan's Nightmare. Her Hellsguard father was never apparent so she was given the last name Himalbraena, because her mother had high hopes for her.
Being raised on a ship is hard, but being the daughter of the captain made it much easier, giving Sylb time to learn fighting, painting, and writing. She often dreamed when she was younger about being the kind of author everyone would know and own a copy of her work, but she never could put quill to parchment enough to finish anything she wrote.
Captain Syhrwyb was always chasing after a rumored allagan treasure, alongside several other captains, and when Sylbgeim reached fifteen summers, volunteered to stay on shore to spy on other crews, giving her mother a heads-up if any got close. Her mother was hesitant to let her daughter out of her sight, but she was old enough to make her own decisions.
It would have been harder to act as a spy, if all her marks weren't drunk and also no closer to the treasure than her own crew. After a winter on shore, she started to regret her decision, her heart yearning to being on the seas again when a new face appeared in the crowds. He was a cabin boy for the Red Seas, another captain with a terrible reputation, but the boy was so sincere and earnest, Sylb started to grow closer to him.
Over three more summers, the two spent every moment they could together, which was only when the Red Seas was docked in the port. She never let on who she truly was, but it was better for it as it would only place the both of them in danger, and that's exactly where they found themselves. As she had grown older, Sylb started to look more and more like her mother, and it didn't take long for others to notice.
Early in the morning near her twentieth summer, three Roegadyn burst into her room, aiming to grab Sylbgeim with the knife under her pillow she managed to slit the throat of one, and slice up the second before a clean punch knocked her out. Waking up being dragged out to the port, she struggled to no avail, ending up on the deck of the Red Seas, tied up to the railing and looking the captain, Dread Waters, in the eyes. He spoke nothing to her, just coldly staring as the ship pulled out of port.
Half a day later, in the middle of the sea, the miqo'te she had been sweet on was hauled up by his collar, lash marks all over his body. Dread Waters placed a pistol in his hand and simply said, "Prove yer loyalty." Sylb stared sadly at him, knowing there was no way out of this situation, starting to open her mouth to say sorry when the hammer fell, a flash of light, and darkness.
Not knowing how long she was out, the Roegadyn woke up as the salt water flooded her open wound, looking up to see the ship moving away. Looking down, she saw the hole was near her heart, but seemingly didn't manage to pierce it. Working her linkpearl, Sylb called out for help from her mother and waited.
For two days, the Roegadyn floated on the water, hoping the waves would push her towards some land, but nothing ever came into view. Everytime she started to fall asleep, she would start to sink and wake up in a panic. With no water or food or sleep, Sylb started to hallucinate and nearly passed away until the Leviathan's Nightmare found her.
It took a week for her to stabalize, going in and out of conciousness after being pulled aboard and when she was finally in her right mind, she found herself on land, her mother asleep next to her.
Captain Syhrwyb gave up the chase after that and keeping Sylbgeim close at hand, which she didn't fight, having them stick to robbing merchant vessels. Sylb never stopped thinking of the artifact however, always keeping her ear out for any rumbling about it, but most of the other crew hunting for it died out and it slowly became forgotten.
Thirteen summers later, one slip and her mother lost the fight. Burying her at sea, the Roegadyn looked at the crew who all looked back at her, expecting orders. It only took a moment before she nodded to them and telling them the hunt was back on.
Over the next eight summers, the crew hunted, crossing the miqo'te who had since left the Red Seas, before finally a cave was found leading into the Allagan research facility where the relic was said to be housed. Several crews converged on the facility, but as misfortune would have it, the calamity would befall at this moment. The facility started to fall apart, the cave collapsing and Sylbgeim barely managed to escape with only a tenth of her crew and their ship sinking to the bottom of the sea.
With no relic or ship, Leviathan's Nightmare fell apart. Dividing the reserve of their treasure they kept housed on shore, she paid the families of those who passed and gave the survivors enough to retire, leaving her with nothing.
Over the next five summers, Sylb wandered listlessly from city-state to city-state, taking odd jobs as she tried to re-find her purpose.
